SP® is a registered trademark of the Union Pacific Railroad.

This 65’ mill gondola with Bettendorf trucks was built for Southern Pacific in the late-1950s and was designed to haul finished structural steel shapes and other bulky loads. Southern Pacific was a Class 1 railroad from 1865 until 1996, when it was absorbed by Union Pacific after falling on hard times financially in the 1970s and 1980s.

Delaware & Hudson

This one-of-a-kind Delaware & Hudson boxcar with Roller Bearing trucks was built in 1964 and painted in a bright red D&H livery. It was 4,932 cubic feet in capacity, and featured a cushioned underframe. The original Delaware & Hudson operated 1,581 miles in the Northeastern United States from 1823 until 1991, when Canadian Pacific absorbed the rail line.

Bradbury Produce

Built in 1928 by the Pressed Steel Car Company, this 40’ double-sheathed wood reefer with Bettendorf trucks is lettered for the Bradbury Produce Carlot Shipping company of Woodward, Oklahoma, carrying their “Sweet Heart Milk Fatted Poultry” product. Bradbury’s Woodward facilities were severely damaged by a 1.8 mile wide F-5 tornado in 1947, causing millions of dollars of damage and many deaths through several towns.

SRN ex-Corinth & Counce Railroad

This ex-Corinth & Counce boxcar with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was obtained by Sabine River & Northern Railroad in the 2000s. SRN is a short line in Texas that primarily hauls pulpwood and finished paper products from mills and finishing plants. SRN has connections with both BNSF and Union Pacific.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe

Built in the mid-1970s to the 1980s, these 100-ton coal hoppers with Barber Roller Bearing trucks belonged to SLSF and ATSF prior to being obtained by BNSF in the mid-1990s. Burlington Northern was formed through the mergers of Great Northern and Northern Pacific in 1970, and then merged with ATSF in 1995 to form BNSF. BNSF is one of the largest freight railroads in the country with over 32,000 miles of rail.

St. Louis Southwestern®

SSW® is a registered trademark of the Union Pacific Railroad.

Built in 1958, this insulated plug-door 40’ boxcar with Roller Bearing trucks was Compartmentizer- equipped and was used to transport temperature sensitive commodities such as food and some household products. St. Louis Southwestern, commonly known as Cotton Belt, was founded in 1891 and became a Southern Pacific subsidiary in 1932, before eventually fully merging in 1992. It is now a heritage component of Union Pacific.

Chesapeake & Ohio®
Road Number 19022

Built in 1957, this 40 foot boxcar with Bettendorf trucks belonged to series 19000-19249. It featured a striking black and yellow paint scheme with a yellow sill stripe. The C&O was formed in 1869 in Virginia, and became a large Class I railroad on the East Coast, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1972, it became part of the Chessie System, after merging with the B&O and Western Maryland. After several more mergers, the heritage of C&O lives on today as a part of CSX Transportation.

GE Rail Services-NATX 3-Car Runner Pack

Built in the late 2000s by TrinityRail for General Electric Railcar Services, this NATX tank car had a capacity of around 25,000 gallons. GE Railcar Services Corp was a division of General Electric, specializing in railcar leasing. It sold its tank car leasing services to Marmon Holdings in 2015.

B&O® and Southern Weathered Gondola 3-Pack With Hay Load

These 52’6” steel side gondolas are carrying a much different load than we typically see; a very interesting load of hay! The Baltimore & Ohio gondolas, series 352000-354899 were built between 1957-1960. They are classed as 0-65, and have Bettendorf trucks. This 70 ton Southern gondola is series 314000-314299. It was built in 1958 at one of Pullman Standard’s plants, and has Bettendorf trucks.

As America grew, the need for automobiles expanded and car frames were some of the earliest auto parts shipped by rail. Many auto makers had specialized component factories spread out over a region, and the parts that were produced were shipped by rail to central assembly plants. The car frame loads were stacked on flat cars and chained in place, or stacked vertically in racks in a gondola as our model depicts.

During the winter season railroads had to be creative to keep loads in open hoppers from getting wet and freezing over during storms. One way was to cover the car with a tarp which could be easily removed by a work crew on site. Burlington Northern was formed through the mergers of Great Northern and Northern Pacific in 1970, and then merged with ATSF in 1995 to form BNSF. BNSF is one of the largest freight railroads in the country with over 32,000 miles of rail.

These C&O general service gondolas were converted into coil steel cars in 1976-1978. They were installed with steel troughs designed to hold the heavy steel and stainless steel coils. As these coil loads didn’t require weather protection, no covers were necessary.

Built in 1939 and belonging to series 125000-125999, this H33-class two bay coal hopper was later rolled into N&W. The Virginian Railway was a Class 1 railroad that was founded in 1907 to transport high quality bituminous coal from West Virginia mines to Hampton Roads ports. In 1959, the Virginian merged into N&W, now Norfolk Southern.
