Santa Fe was a large Class 1 railroad founded in 1859 and operated for over 130 years before being merged with Burlington Northern in 1996 to form BNSF.

This 40’ standard box car with single door, full ladders and no roofwalk is brown with black ends and runs on Bettendorf trucks. Built in 1941 for New York Central’s P&LE subsidiary, and later rebuilt into Baltimore & Ohio’s B-6 car class, it served B&O into the 1970s before retirement. Baltimore & Ohio was the oldest common carrier railroad in the United States, founded in 1830. After numerous mergers, it became a part of CSX Transportation where its heritage lives on today.

Built in 1960 for Pennsylvania Railroad, this 40’ class X54A boxcar was outfitted with Pullman-Standard Compartmentizers and was used for food service. Pennsylvania was a large Class 1 railroad formed in 1846 and grew to be a predominant shipper on the east coast until 1968 when it merged with rival New York Central to form Penn Central.

Built in 1977 in a series of 200 cars for Southern Railway, these 89’ cars had Portec racks installed and were assigned to the GM plant in Roseland, Georgia. The 89’ enclosed autorack design became the universal standard used by most railroads. With end loading doors and enclosed sides, this design prevents vandalism and pilferage and helps to protect vehicles from the elements.

Built in 1949 in an order of 800 units, these cars were used in general service often carrying rock, minerals, or coal. Frisco, the common name for the St. Louis-San Francisco Railway, was founded in 1876 and ran for 104 years before being purchased and absorbed into the Burlington Northern system in 1980.

Belonging to Pennsylvania’s GLA-class of twin-bay hoppers, these 50-ton cars were used exclusively for coal. Built in 1907, and rebuilt several times after, they continued in service through the 1950s before being scrapped. These cars featured a motivational wartime message, “Coal Goes to War,” indicating the importance of that natural resource to national security.
