CSX®
Road Number NYC 223113

Built for a predecessor road, this CSX 60’ waffle-side boxcar with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was later repainted into a more modern CSX scheme, while retaining a New York Central reporting mark. CSX was formed through the 1986 mergers of Chessie System and Seaboard System/ Family Lines, and continues to operate today across more than 21,000 miles of track in the Eastern United States.

Grand Trunk Western
Road Number GTW 316024

This 50’ Airslide Covered Hopper with 100-ton Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built in 1978 for Grand Trunk Western. With a special epoxy lining, these cars were specifically designed for use with fine-grained commodities, like powdered sugar, that could settle en-route making unloading difficult. Grand Trunk Western Railroad traces its roots back to 1858, when the Chicago, Detroit & Canada Grand Trunk Junction Railroad was formed. GTW was later absorbed by Canadian National.

Chesapeake & Ohio®
Road Number C&O 22763

This 50’ box car with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built in the mid-1960s for Chesapeake & Ohio, later becoming Chessie System in the early 1970s. It was painted in a unique trial scheme, with a yellow body, blue door, and orange door bars. Chessie System was formed through the 1972 mergers of Chesapeake & Ohio, Baltimore & Ohio, and Western Maryland. It was one of the largest Class 1 railroads until 1986 when Seaboard System merged with Chessie to form CSX Transportation.

Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe
Road Number ATSF 40381

This 40’ box car with Andrews Trucks was built in 1925 and converted for zinc loading in the early 1950s, toward the end of its revenue life. Founded in 1859, Santa Fe was one of the largest railroads in North America up until 1996, when it merged with Burlington Northern to form BNSF.

This 40’ box car with Bettendorf trucks was built in 1936 at the CB&Q Havelock Shops and belonged to a series of 500 cars. The CB&Q, commonly known as the Burlington, was founded in 1849 and was based in Chicago, Illinois. In the 1970s, it was merged with the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, and SP&S to form Burlington Northern, which is now part of BNSF.

Union Pacific®
Road Number UP 960997

REPRINT

UP® is a registered trademark of the Union Pacific Railroad.

Built in June 1977 in a series of 44 cars, this 60’ excess height boxcar with Barber Roller Bearing trucks belonged to class B-100-5 and was serviced in 1982. Union Pacific continues to operate today as one of the largest Class 1 railroads in North America with over 32,000 miles of track.

Providence & Worcester

Built in 1978 by Pullman-Standard for Providence & Worcester, these 89’ flat cars with Barber Roller Bearing trucks were used for Trailer on Flat Car service through the 1980s. Providence & Worcester was founded in 1844, and in 1892, the New Haven leased the P&W for 99 years. When New Haven merged into Penn Central in the later 1960s, P&W was released from the lease deal and became a separate entity, and is now owned and operated by Genesee & Wyoming.

Via Rail is a Canadian-owned passenger rail service company mandated to operate intercity service throughout Canada. It was founded January 12, 1977, and still operates both intercity services and voyages into the heart of the Canadian wilderness.

Commonly called “TBOX cars” in reference to the reporting mark, they have a 7,538 cubic-foot capacity and can be found in trains hauling general freight all-across North America.

Built in the late 1950s for Canadian National, this standard flat car with Bettendorf trucks is carrying a post-WWII De Havilland Mosquito that was purchased by Spartan Air Services, Ltd, a Canadian company that performed mapping and aerial surveillance. Canadian National is one of the largest railroads headquartered in Canada, with over 20,000 miles of track and service from Canada into the United States.
