Introducing New MTL Body Style!: 50' Airslide Hopper

GATX

These 50’ Airslide hoppers are light blue with blue side panel and yellow lettering and run on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. GATX produced the 4180 cf Airslide covered hoppers between 1963 and 1980 providing customers with an innovative way to load and unload product quickly via air pressure. The unusual box car style design for this hopper allowed for more interior volume than standard hoppers of equal size. Three variations of the body were built, this GACX car represents the post 1973 design and proved rugged enough to be in service today.

Canadian National

RD#: ‘Lake Nipigon’

This 10-1-2 heavyweight sleeper car is painted green with black band and yellow lettering and runs on 6-wheel passenger trucks. As with most railroads during the early part of the 20th Century, providing berthing accommodations for long trans-national routes was a necessity. Pullman Standard Company only developed a few standardized floor plans, the 10-1-2 being one of the more successful ones. They found their way on most overnight trains and offered various levels of comfort for their customers.

This 70’ heavyweight mail baggage car is Pullman green with white lettering and runs on 6-wheel passenger trucks. Before the advent of aircraft transporting mail across the country, railroads provided most of the bulk postal deliveries all over their routes. Mail Baggage cars gave railroads the flexibility to carry both freight and mail to smaller communities when necessary.

NASA Series - Car #1

This weathered 50’ steel side, 14 panel, fixed end gondola with fishbelly sides is blue with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Operating a captive fleet of railcars, NASA’s unique mission requires specially fitted cars to carry it out. This gondola is designed to transport up to three “SRM” end ring racks, used on the shuttle solid rockets, as well as general freight as needed at the Kennedy Space Center.

Pennsylvania Railroad

This 3-dome tank car is grey with black lettering and runs on Bettendorf trucks. Built in 1928, these 6,000 gallon tank cars had three separate compartments making them ideal for transporting different commodities in the same car. These proved useful for delivering smaller, as needed loads to their customers.

Chicago, Burlington & Quincy®

This 40’ hy-cube box car with single door is red with white lettering and white diagonal stripe on the door and runs on Roller Bearing Trucks. Built by Pullman Standard in Bessemer, Alabama, as part of series 19825-19839, these 4900 cubic foot boxcars were known as “baby hi-cubes” because of their short length and taller height. Purpose built to handle loading outsized appliances, they found their way on many midwest and western roads.

Southern Pacific®

These 89’ TOFC flat cars are brown with white lettering and run on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built as part of series 513650-513699 these flat cars became the basis for a wide variety of conversions, everything from hauling oversized loads to modern auto racks. With the building booms in the west they were called upon to transport oversized loads for both residential and industrial customers region wide.

Cancarb

This 3-bay covered hopper with round hatches is dark charcoal grey with white lettering and blue herald. Owned by ACFX, this car was repainted for CANCARB in 1988. Cancarb Limited is a leading international manufacturer and marketing of medium thermal carbon black, used primarily in the rubber industry.

These 40’ trailers are aluminum with red and black lettering. Cotton Belt Railroad, like most major roads, fielded a large fleet of trailers of different sizes that could be found attached to company trucks or loaded on purpose built flat cars for TOFC service.

This 53’ corrugated container is green with white lettering and yellow herald. EMP is a domestic shipping service offered by both Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific® railroads and can be found working with other roads such as CP, WC, KCS and CN among others. They have a fleet of almost 40,000 53’ domestic containers that can be found nationwide.

Burlington Northern Santa Fe

These 2-bay covered hoppers are mineral brown with white lettering and run on Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1954 as part of series 407053-407208 these cars were designed to allow railroads to deliver smaller quantities of goods more economically than with larger cars. With the merger of BN and Santa Fe, BNSF acquired a large fleet of these cars.

Frisco

These 50’ rib side box cars with single door are brown with white lettering and ‘coonskin’ logo and run on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1972 as part of series 42100-42499, these cars served a rich agricultural region between the Midwest and South Central, United States.

PER DIEM SERIES - Car #8: Lake Erie, Franklin & Clarion

This 50’ rib side box car with single door and no roofwalk is yellow with black lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. The Lake Erie, Franklin, and Clarion Railroad was a fifteen mile long short line that interchanged with Conrail at Summerville, Pennsylvania to Clarion, Pennsylvania. The road was incorporated in 1913. The LEF&C participated in the Per Diem program during the 1970s to acquire modern cars to better serve their customers.
