Union Pacific® WWII Poster Series - Car# 1

NEW SERIES

This 50’ troop sleeper car is dark green and runs on Allied Full Cushion trucks. During World War II, Union Pacific produced a variety of morale-boosting posters that depicted the railroad’s involvement in supporting the war. This car features a bright yellow poster with UP® shield watermark and an engineer with a very determined look.

CSX®
RD#: CSXT 620316A/620316B

These 70’ Husky Stack well cars are blue with white lettering and run on ASF Ride Control trucks. Built in the 1990s, these 620300-620329 series CSX well cars accepted containers up to 48’ in length in the bottom well position. The Husky-Stack® well car was first introduced in 1990 at the International Intermodal Expo in Atlanta, GA.

Norfolk & Western
RD#: 1202

This 70’ heavyweight mail baggage car is maroon with buff lettering and runs on 6-wheel passenger trucks. The Norfolk & Western was a Class 1 railroad that was headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia. While the railroad was known for massive coal trains, N&W also ran many passenger trains between Norfolk and Columbus as well as other routes on the east coast. This BMf class mail baggage car had black ends and extended door reinforcement plates.

Southern Pacific®
RD#: SP 211305

This 50’ standard box car with plug & sliding door is brown with white lettering and runs on Bettendorf trucks. Built in the 1950s for Southern Pacific, this Class B- 0-35 car had an experimental plug door, which was new technology for the time, and a regular sliding door. It was the only car in the series to receive combination doors.

HEINZ® Series - Car #6

This 36’ wood sheathed ice reefer with truss rods is brown with decorated sides and runs on Arch Bar trucks. The H.J. Heinz Company was founded in 1869 by Henry John Heinz, first manufacturing horseradish. By the early 1900s, Heinz was manufacturing over 60 food products and relied heavily on their fleet of over 700 colorful billboard boxcars to distribute their products across the country.

Chicago, Burlington & Quincy

This 70’ heavyweight baggage car is Pullman green with gold lettering and runs on 6-wheel passenger trucks. Built in 1922, this BA-12 class car was refurbished in the 1940s and served through the 1960s.

Burlington Northern

This 40’ drop bottom gondola is green with white lettering and runs on Bettendorf trucks. As part of series 554450-554474, this 2048 cubic foot drop-bottom gondola was the only 40’ drop-bottom car on the BN roster. Formerly a Great Northern car absorbed by the BN merger, it was serviced in 1977 and given a fresh coat of BN paint.

Railbox

This 50’ rib side box car with plug & sliding door and no roofwalk is yellow with black door and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. It was built in 1978 as part of series 50400-50999. Railbox was established as a free-running nationwide pool of general service box cars to help alleviate box car supply problems.

Southern Pacific®

This 50’ standard box car with double doors is brown with white lettering and runs on Bettendorf trucks. Built to meet the growing demand for larger door openings which permittied ease of use for forklifts and larger loading devices. The 1955-era round herald was dropped a few years later during repaints and as new cars were manufactured.

CSX® Containers

These 53’ corrugated containers are white with blue lettering. CSX Transportation combines fuel efficient rail transport with short-haul trucking to effectively compete with conventional long-haul trucking. CSX Transportation’s Intermodal service is one of North America’s largest, with over 40 terminals east of the Mississippi.

Napa Valley Wine Train Caboose

This 31’ bay window caboose is maroon with white lettering and runs on Bettendorf Swing Motion trucks. Traveling through one of the best known wine producing regions in the world, the Napa Valley Wine Train runs on a rail corridor built in 1864. Pulled by vintage motive power, the 25-year-old company features 100-year-old restored passenger cars. This caboose serves as a ticket/reservations advertisement for the railroad.

Road Name#: ‘Kay See’

This modernized heavyweight business car is black with yellow and red stripes and runs on 6-wheel Commonwealth Equalizer trucks. Named “Kay See,” it was rebuilt with new sheet metal sides, improved windows and upgraded interiors, giving it new life, and is still used by Kansas City Southern on excursion and company business passenger trains.

Originally built in the mid-1940s for Union Pacific, this 40’ box car was later converted in 1952 into an impact instruction car at the Omaha shops. Serving to illustrate the importance of safe car handling, this car had a transparent sidewall to show cargo movement, along with force and speed gauges displayed on the side.
