APC 48' Container

This 48’ rib side container is aluminum with red vertical band and logo. These containers are commonly seen filling the space in the bottom position of intermodal well cars with equal-length or longer containers above them. APC operates container ships and intermodal rail and truck services around the world.

CSX®

RD#: 203420/203437

These 50’ airslide hoppers are tan with black lettering and run on 100-ton Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built by the General American Transportation Co (GATC) for several of CSX’s constituent roads – Seaboard System, Chessie, and C&O, they were renumbered as the series 203402-203448. These cars were specifically designed for use with fine-grained commodities, like powdered sugar, that could settle en-route making unloading difficult.

Cotton Belt®

These 40’ standard box cars with plug door and red with grey lower band and white lettering run on Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1959, these unique 25 Compartmentizer-equipped cars wore an experimental paint scheme similar to the red and grey paint scheme of Southern Pacific diesels. Ultimately vetoed by management for use on freight cars, these cars continued to wear this paint for years to come.

Kansas City Southern

This 89’ tri-level closed autorack is white with the KCS 125th Anniversary Logo adorning the sides. It runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 2012 with WRWK reporting marks, these cars are frequently seen in long unit trains.

Per Diem Series - Car #10: McCloud River

This 50’ rib side box car with double doors and no roofwalk is brown and white with aluminum roof and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Headquartered in McCloud, California, the McCloud River Railroad interchanged with the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific and operated from 1897 until 2009. Primarily a lumber/timber railroad, the McCloud once had over 1000 railcars and had regular passenger service until 1952.

NASA Series - Car #3: Helium Car

This helium car was one of the heaviest railcars ever made. Built in 1961, these cars were initially used by the BLM to transport helium from mines in Texas. Later, they found their niche servicing NASA Titan rockets and the Space Shuttle up until the last shuttle flight in 2011.

Canadian National

This 70’ heavyweight horse car is green with black roof and yellow lettering and runs on 6-wheel passenger trucks. Built in 1921 by Osgoode Bradley in Worcester, Massachusetts, they were then transferred to the CN in 1924 from GTW. They contained 24 horse stalls and three doors per side to allow efficient loading and unloading of horses.

New Haven

This RPO heavyweight passenger car is green with white lettering and runs on 6-wheel passenger trucks. Built in 1914 by the Laconia Car Company, they were equipped to sort and catalogue mail en-route, with mail bag storage racks and sorting tables. While these cars did not have the recognizable wide baggage doors of some RPO’s, they did still have mail slots for public drop-off of mail parcels directly into the car.

Northern Pacific

This 50’ standard box car with single door and no roofwalk is brown with white lettering and yinyang herald. During the late 1960s, many cars on the Northern Pacific roster were rebuilt or replaced to increase load capacities. By 1969, these 50-ton cars had been upgraded to 55-ton cars and downgraded from merchandise service.

Union Pacific®

These 50’ gondolas with fishbelly sides and drop ends are synthetic red with yellow lettering and run on Bettendorf trucks. Built in 1957, as part of series 30000-30699, these cars filled the need for specialized gondolas. Eventually, these cars were rebuilt and reduced to 68-ton capacity due to added adjustable bulkheads and car covers to better protect the loads they carried.

This 50’ rib side box car with single door and no roofwalk is maroon with white door and lettering, and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Leased to the B&H Railroad by Intel Rail, the car sports the tippedchampagne glass logo, symbolically toasting the public as it passes by. Just a nine-mile shortline serving the vineyards and wineries of the Hammondsport, New York area, it is easy to see where the slogan “The Champagne Trail” originates.
