This 70’ heavyweight mail baggage car displays the standard orange and maroon scheme common on Milwaukee Road passenger equipment. Milwaukee was an important hub in the distribution of freight and mail through most of the 20th century. As a result, Milwaukee Road fielded a large and varied fleet of cars designed to deliver the mail from the Great Lakes to the Pacific Ocean. These cars had 30-foot secure mail rooms and 40’ baggage compartments.

Wabash Valley RR was a short line that operated in southern Illinois and parts of Kansas for only 5 years on former PRR track. In order to compete with area railroads, the WVR bought into the Per Diem program and was able to upgrade their small fleet with modern equipment.

This 40’ double-sheathed wood box car with 1-1/2 door and vertical brake wheel is brown with white lettering and runs on Andrews trucks. Built in 1923, as part of series 38000-38499, by American Car and Foundry in Detroit, MI the 3,645 cu ft. auto carrier featured a reinforced fishbelly underframe. The 72” forward-facing Rocky is typical of the road’s herald configuration from 1922 to 1935. Rocky was later seen in side-facing silhouette.

This 50’ steel side fixed end gondola with low cover is painted black with large orange Western Pacific feather and yellow lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built in 1945 by Mt. Vernon Car Co. as part of series 6501-6600, this gondola is one of 10 re-numbered cars 6051-6060 that were converted to steel bar service. WP picked up part of the steel contract with the giant US Steel. They received both SRE (Standard Railway Equipment) roofs and moveable bulkheads.

ATSF Passenger Car 4-pack
In the late 1930s Santa Fe’s passenger cars began to modernize with the introduction of the fluted-side Budd Passenger cars. Faced with integrating their smooth-side Pullman Standard cars into the consist, the company decided to repaint the cars silver with faux fluting details using black faded stripes to match the Budd cars. This was known as Shadow-Striping and remained on the cars well into the 1950s.
