Burlington Northern/ex-CB&Q
Road Number BN 453688

BNSF FAMILY TREE SERIES #1

This 3-bay covered hopper with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was built in April 1967 by American Car & Foundry for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy. In 1970, CB&Q, SP&S, GN, and NP merged to form Burlington Northern, and this 3-bay Centerflow covered hopper was repainted into BN Green. Burlington Northern continued to operate until 1996, when it merged with ATSF to form BNSF.

Southern Pacific®
Road Number SP 319

SP® is a registered trademark of the Union Pacific Railroad.

This 34' wood-sheathed caboose with Bettendorf trucks was built in 1929 and featured a slanted cupola. The 50 cars built were placed into a random number series of over 600 cars. They were used through the late 1950s. Southern Pacific was a Class 1 railroad from 1865 until 1996, when it was absorbed by Union Pacific after falling on hard times financially in the 1970s and 1980s.

Penn Central
Road Number PC 252455

Pennsylvania Railroad rebuilt 40’ boxcars in the late 1950s to extend their service life amid a boxcar shortage. Later, after being merged into Penn Central, they received new PC green paint in the late 1960s. This car was outfitted with a variation of the Penn Central logo, in white and red paint, with Bettendorf trucks. Penn Central was formed through the merger of Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central, and operated until 1976 when it was rolled into Conrail Corporation.

BKTY
Road Numbers BKTY 151068/151172

Built in 1977 by FMC for Hartford & Slocomb Railroad, these 50’ boxcars with Barber Roller Bearing trucks were later operated by the New Orleans Public Belt. Eventually, Union Pacific received the cars and painted them in their boxcar red scheme, with ex-Missouri-Kansas-Texas “BKTY” reporting mark and GATX lettering.

Founded in 1906, Railroad Magazine was the first, and one of the most popular railroad pulp publications, containing first-hand railroad stories and informative articles. It was published until 1979 when it merged with Railfan Magazine to form Railfan & Railroad, now owned by White River Productions. This 40’ Hy-Cube runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks.

Western Pacific®
Road Number WP 11796

WP® is a registered trademark of the Union Pacific Railroad.

Built in April of 1967, this three-bay ACF Centerflow covered hopper with Barber Roller Bearing trucks belonged to an order of 50 cars. Western Pacific used the cars to ship minerals such as potash, salt, and phosphates, along with some grains. Western Pacific was a Class 1 Railroad formed in 1903 in order to offer another rail option to the established Utah routes of the Southern Pacific. WP was acquired in 1982 by Union Pacific Railroad.

Northern Pacific
Road Number NP 100431

Built in 1912, this 40’ boxcar with Archbar trucks was used in automobile service for Northern Pacific Railway. Northern Pacific was a Class 1 Railroad formed in 1864, and eventually acquired in 1970 by Burlington Northern Railroad through mergers, which went on to merge with Santa Fe becoming BNSF.

Baltimore & Ohio®
Road Number B&O 463529

This 40’ boxcar with Bettendorf trucks was built in the 1940s and rebuilt in the late 1960s by Chicago Freight Car Company. Baltimore & Ohio was the oldest common carrier railroad in the United States, founded in 1830. After numerous mergers, it became a part of CSX Transportation, where its heritage lives on today.

These GS-class 40’ drop-bottom gondolas with Bettendorf trucks were used in wood chip service, some cars receiving upgrades and wooden side extensions to extend the cubic capacity of the lightweight load. The Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, commonly known as the Milwaukee Road, and was a Class I railroad that operated from 1847 till 1986, before being rolled into the Soo Line Railroad.

Built by National Steel Car in early 2003 for Railbox, a TTX subsidiary, this 286,000-pound capacity, 60’ rib-side high-cube boxcar with Barber Roller Bearing trucks features double-plug doors and belongs to a series of 500 cars. Commonly called “TBOX cars” in reference to the reporting mark, they have a 7,538 cubic-foot capacity and can be found in trains hauling general freight all-across North America.
