Western Pacific®

This 50’ standard box car with 8’ plug door, no roofwalk and short ladders is brown with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Originally of series 8001-8040, this box car had its roofwalk removed and was renumbered into the 60401-60440 series in the late 1970s. It features the classic Feather River Route herald popular in the early 1900s.

Norfolk & Western

This 12-1 heavyweight sleeper car is maroon with buff lettering and upper and lower stripes and runs on 6-wheel passenger trucks. Named “Cuttyhunk”, this Norfolk & Western heavyweight sleeper car was acquired after the dissolution of Pullman Standard, and it served on numerous east coast trains through the early 1960s before becoming a MOW car.

Denver & Rio Grande Western®

This 78’ heavyweight paired-window coach car is painted in Rio Grande gold, silver and black and runs on 6-wheel passenger trucks. Assigned service on the Royal Gorge train, this 1920s-built car continued in service until the early 1960s when it was retired and dismantled.

Chicago & North Western®

This 89’ tri-level closed autorack is yellow with black lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. Built by Bethlehem Steel in 1969, this 89’ enclosed autorack design became the universal standard for most railroads by the mid-1970s, as it prevented vandalism and pilferage and helped to protect vehicles from the elements, and is commonly used to this day.

Friendship Train Series - Car #7

This 50’ flat car with platform enclosure and covered spotlight load was part of the 1947 Friendship Train which collected food donated by Americans in cities all across the U.S. to be shipped to the people of France and Italy who desperately needed help following the end of World War II. Ultimately, over 250 railcars of food and clothing were donated.

This 89’ TOFC flat car is blue with white lettering and runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks. This flat car was created out of two wreck-damaged railcars, Southern Pacific 900317 and RTTX 159676, by the ATSF railway and was purchased by NASA in 1983. While under NASA employment, it was used to carry containerized equipment as a part of the “Langley Project,” a hypersonic wind tunnel program.

This 50’ rib side box car with plug door and no roofwalk is green with white lettering and aluminum roof and runs on Roller Bearing trucks. Built in St. Louis for Burlington Northern in March of 1975, it was used to carry fragile or shock-sensitive loads. These cars could be found across the BN network.

These 53’ corrugated containers with horizontal ribs on the front end are used to transport many types of commodities. These 110” tall Jindo-built units are truly ubiquitous across the United States rail network, often riding one above the other aboard “double-stack” well cars. Road number 259748 was custom painted to denote one million loads carried by J.B. Hunt in 2010.

Circus Series - Car#7: Great Northern

This 40’ standard box car with single door is red with large white herald and runs on Bettendorf trucks. In an effort to develop a new paint scheme, Great Northern decorated a number of box cars in different experimental paint schemes in 1956 and sent them across the GN network for feedback. Due to the bright and gaudy colors, this group of cars were dubbed the “Circus Cars”.

Southern Pacific®

These 40’ standard box cars with single door are brown with white lettering and runs on Bettendorf trucks. These boxcars were marked with the large “Circle-C” logo, denoting they were modified for copper bar service between the mines of Arizona and the smelters of Phelps Dodge in Texas. They had reinforced floors and additional sill straps with plywood linings to secure the heavy loads.

CTCX 16-Unit Tank Car Set

It is common today to see miles of similarly marked tank cars snaking their way from the refineries to major distribution centers. As a safety measure, Buffer Cars, generally older covered hoppers, are placed at the head of the consist and at the rear providing crush space in case of an accident. This new 16-car set features two BNSF Airslide Hoppers converted to Buffer Cars and 14 modern CTCX tank cars giving the modeler a ready-to-run movable pipeline for their layouts.
