General American Transportation Corp.
Road Numbers GACX 46576/46622

Built in the early 1970s, these 50’ two-bay Airslide hoppers with Barber Roller Bearing trucks featured the GATX “Service Driven” logo. These cars were specially designed with an air-permeable layer inside the bays that could help loosen fine-grained commodities that would often settle en-route, like powdered sugar, thus making unloading easier. General American Transportation Corporation, now known simply as GATX, is a large railcar leasing company, with over 122,000 railcars in the fleet.

Northern Pacific
Road Number NP 45617

This 40’ boxcar with Bettendorf trucks was built in 1942 by Pullman-Standard, and rebuilt in 1964 at the Brainerd Shops. Northern Pacific was a Class 1 Railroad formed in 1864, and eventually acquired in 1970 by Burlington Northern Railroad through mergers. Today most of the remaining assets have been repainted into BNSF colors.

New York Central
Road Number NYC 48222

This 50’ box car with Bettendorf trucks was built in April 1964, at DSI shops. This car featured movable bulkheads and DFB loaders, as well as a cushioned underframe. New York Central was a Class 1 Railroad founded in 1853 and operated until 1968, when it was merged with long-time rival Pennsylvania, to form Penn Central.

Chesapeake & Ohio®
Road Number C&O 23764

This 40’ boxcar with Bettendorf trucks was rebuilt in 1965 from older cars built in the late 1940s to fill the growing need for additional boxcars. It featured DF-8 loaders and movable bulkheads to help secure loads. C&O was formed in 1869 in Virginia, and became a large Class I railroad on the East Coast, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1972, it became part of the Chessie System, after merging with B&O and Western Maryland. After several more mergers, the heritage of C&O lives on today as a part of CSX Transportation.

Founded in 1906, Railroad Magazine was the first, and one of the most popular railroad pulp publications, containing first-hand railroad stories and informative articles. It was published until 1979 when it merged with Railfan Magazine to form Railfan & Railroad, now owned by White River Productions. This 40’ Hy-Cube runs on Barber Roller Bearing trucks.

CSX®/ex-Conrail

CSX® FAMILY TREE SERIES #10

Built in October 1971 for New York Central/Penn Central, this 50’ gondola with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was used for Coil Steel Loading through its later Conrail acquisition, eventually becoming a Maintenance of Way car for CSX’s scrap railroad ties. CSX was formed through the 1986 mergers of Chessie System and Seaboard System/ Family Lines, and continues to operate today across more than 21,000 miles of track in the Eastern United States.

Burlington Northern
Road Number BN 189070

Built in the mid-1940’s for the CB&Q at the Havelock Shops, this 40’ box car with friction bearing trucks was later rebuilt and modernized and painted into post-merger Burlington Northern green. Burlington Northern was formed through the mergers of Great Northern and Northern Pacific in 1970, and then merged with ATSF in 1995 to form BNSF.

Pennsylvania
Road Number PRR 21008

REPRINT

This series of 300 cars with friction bearing trucks was built by Samuel Rea Shops in 1959, and belonged to the X53 class of Pennsylvania’s 50 foot boxcars. They were used primarily for food products and equipped with heaters, insulating plug doors, and DF belt loaders. Pennsylvania was a large Class 1 railroad formed in 1846 and grew to be a predominant shipper on the east coast until 1968 when it merged with rival New York Central to form Penn Central.

Montana Rail Link 35th Anniversary

Montana Rail Link is celebrating their 35th Anniversary in 2022, and in recognition of this achievement, this 60’ high-cube boxcar with Barber Roller Bearing trucks features a locomotive inspired paint scheme and MRL route map. Montana Rail Link is a privately owned Class II railroad based primarily in the State of Montana, with trackage and trackage rights into Idaho and Washington, following former Northern Pacific lines. MRL was founded in 1987, and was a profitable and critical link between BNSF and Union Pacific interchange points in the Western United States.

Western Pacific was a Class 1 Railroad formed in 1903 in order to offer another rail option to the established Utah routes of the Southern Pacific. WP was acquired in 1982 by Union Pacific Railroad. This Western Pacific 40’ box car with Bettendorf trucks was part of series 19500-19599.

New Haven

This 40’ New Haven box car with Bettendorf trucks was built in 1941 and this paint scheme ran throught the 1940s and 50s. New Haven Railroad was founded in 1872 and headquartered in New Haven, Connecticut. Even though it made it through several bankruptcies, the railroad eventually became unprofitable and was rolled into the Penn Central railroad conglomerate in 1968.

Built by National Steel Car in early 2003 for Railbox, a TTX subsidiary, these 286,000-pound capacity, 60’ rib-side high-cube boxcars with Barber Roller Bearing trucks feature double-plug doors and belong to a series of 500 cars. Commonly called “TBOX cars” in reference to the reporting mark, they have a 7,538 cubic-foot capacity and can be found in trains hauling general freight all-across North America.

MP was a Class 1 railroad in the western United States, founded in 1872 and was one of the first railroads in the United States. MP had a variety of passenger trains from the early 1900s through the 1960s, including the famous “Eagle” trains such as the “Missouri River Eagle” and “Colorado Eagle.” In 1980, Union Pacific purchased MP, where its heritage lives on.

During the mid-1950’s, Pullman-Standard developed a revolutionary all-welded steel, 2,003 cubic-foot two bay covered hopper that would become one of the most popular cars of its type with railroads and private industry. The PS-2 had a dividing wall inside so multiple products could be carried at the same time and its 8 round hatches allowed for quick, efficient loading. It was designed to haul everything from powdered chemicals, to grains, to construction materials such as sand or cement. Versatile and durable, this car continued in revenue service into the early 2000’s, and was sometimes found later in MOW service.
