This 3-2 heavyweight modernized business car with 6-wheel passenger trucks is named after Alfred E. Perlman, a famous executive of several railroads and president of Penn Central. CSX was formed through the 1986 mergers of Chessie System and Seaboard System/Family Lines, and continues to operate today across more than 21,000 miles of track in the Eastern United States.

The Louisville & Nashville used 39’ single dome tank cars with Bettendorf trucks as “Pollution Control Cars” to help keep dirty lube oil from entering the ground water.

Great Northern with Bearing Housing Load

Undecorated resin cast load.

Built in the late 1920s, this 50’ flatcar with fishbelly sides and Bettendorf trucks was used in general service for large loads, such as industrial equipment, construction supplies, or farm machinery. Great Northern was a Class 1 railroad founded in 1881 and eventually was merged with Northern Pacific and others to form Burlington Northern Railroad in 1970.

These 3-bay covered hopper cars with Barber roller bearing trucks were built in the late 1970s for Archer-Daniels-Midland. ADM is an American owned food processing and trading company with more than 360 factories worldwide, processing foods and beverages, along with industrial and agricultural oils.

Built in 1951, this 1,647 cu. ft. capacity, 52-foot gondola with Bettendorf trucks featured a custom designed rack to brace large cargos. The original Delaware & Hudson operated 1,581 miles in the Northeastern United States from 1823 until 1991, when Canadian Pacific absorbed the rail line.

Conrail

Built in the 1970s, this 7,100 cubic-foot, 60’ double-plug door boxcar with Barber roller bearing trucks was designed for large or bulky commodities. New York Central merged with its rival, the Pennsylvania Railroad, in 1968 to form Penn Central, which went bankrupt two years later and was merged into Conrail in 1976.

Built in 1966, this BX-108 class 40’ high cube boxcar with roller bearing trucks featured a “Super Shock Control” cushioned underframe and DF loaders. Founded in 1859, Santa Fe was one of the largest railroads in North America up until 1996, when it merged with Burlington Northern to form BNSF.

It was designed to haul everything from powdered chemicals, to grains, to construction materials such as sand or cement. Versatile and durable, this car continued in revenue service into the early 2000’s, and was sometimes found later in MOW service.

Pullman-Standard built over one million freight cars and decorated several over the years commemorating various milestones. This 40’ boxcar with Bettendorf trucks commemorates the 75,000th PS-1 built since 1946, and was built in 1956 on the 10th anniversary of the PS-1. Founded in the late 1860s, Pullman-Standard became the nation’s largest manufacturer of freight and passenger cars by the 1930s and continued to produce freight cars until 1968.

Built in February of 1938, these H-9 Class, 33’ two-bay coal hoppers with Bettendorf trucks were re-painted and relettered in 1963 by Norfolk & Western. Norfolk & Western was known as the “King Coal” line, and was a Class 1 railroad headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia. Today, it is now part of the Norfolk Southern system following a 1980 merger with Southern Railway.

Air Repeater Cars were used to increase efficiency of train air brakes, especially on long trains and during colder weather. These 50’ boxcars include a repeater relay that reads pneumatic signals from the train, and boosts the same signal to the rear section of the train. Southern Pacific® had seven Repeater cars built with roller trucks in the early 1960s, which were numbered #260-266 and used between 1975 and 1977.
