Built in the 1960s by PC&F, this 90-ton capacity single-door cushioned underframe car with Barber Roller Bearing trucks was used in coiled tin plate service, painted in the silver and orange two-tone scheme. It later had its roofwalk removed and was repainted in a simple solid orange and black scheme in 1977, and demoted to a general service car, serving through the 1980s.

This 40’ box car with Bettendorf trucks was built for the Louisville & Nashville at part of a 250-car series. The L&N was a Class I railroad with just over 6,000 miles of track across the South-east US, before being merged into Seaboard System in the early 1980s. Seaboard Air Line merged with Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in 1967, forming the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, which was then renamed Seaboard System in 1982.

These 2971 cubic foot capacity two-bay ACF hopper cars with Barber Roller Bearing trucks were built in 1974 for Denver & Rio Grande Western and belonged to series 10000-10069. After subsequent mergers in the 1990s, they were transferred to Union Pacific where they continue to serve today, repainted but still carrying the D&RGW reporting marks and series numbers. These cars were used to transport high-density granular commodities such as sand.

Built in the early 1960s, these cars with Roller Bearing trucks featured color coded paint schemes that designated usage type. This car featured a full-length cover and was used for steel service. Soo Line was in operation from 1949 until 1990, when it was consolidated into Canadian Pacific.

Built in the 1910s and shopped in the mid-1930s, these stock cars with Coil Elliptic trucks were primarily used for cattle, but also carried sheep and other livestock. Pennsylvania was a large Class 1 railroad formed in 1846 and grew to be a predominant shipper on the east coast until 1968 when it merged with rival New York Central to form Penn Central.

Built in the mid-1950s, this welded-steel caboose with Bettendorf Caboose Swing Motion trucks featured a plain black paint scheme with yellow stripes, indicating that it was radio-equipped. D&RGW was formed in 1870 and operated the highest mainline railroad in the United States through the Colorado Rockies at an altitude of 10,240 feet.

CSX® Family Tree Caboose

Built in the late 1970s for the Baltimore & Ohio, this M930 caboose with Bettendorf Caboose Swing Motion trucks eventually became one of CSX’s “Cross Tracks Safely” safety awareness campaign cars. With yellow ends, these cabooses had colorful yellow and blue safety striping on the sides. CSX was formed through the 1986 mergers of Chessie System and Seaboard System Family Lines, and continues to operate today across more than 21,000 miles of track in the Eastern United States.

During WW2 Defense production required innovative ways to transport components between assembly plants. ATSF was tasked with moving the B-29 Center Wing section and modified a number of cars for the task. These were always seen in three car consists with two buffers on either side to compensate for the length of the wing.
