Built in 1929, this 70-ton class F30 flat car with Bettendorf trucks was used in general service for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Pennsylvania was a large Class 1 railroad formed in 1846 and grew to be a predominant shipper on the east coast until 1968 when it merged with rival New York Central to form Penn Central.

The M4A3 Sherman tank was a game changer for Allied Forces during WW2. There were a number of basic variations and modifications, both from the factory and in the field, in an attempt to meet the growing power of Axis tanks and artillery. They were built in factories all over the US and in Canada and once war production started in earnest, using common designs and components put production into overdrive. Finished tanks were shipped via rail to strategic outposts and ports across North America. Almost every railroad had a hand in transporting strategic loads across the country, the Sherman being one of them.

These government Bureau of Mines cars were visible indicators of Progressive Era humanitarian and national reform programs.

Surplus freight cars often live on, avoiding the scrapper. Across the country, flat cars are used as bridges, boxcars as storage containers, and covered hoppers for storage of feed and grain. Generally these are elevated so that trucks can drive below and be loaded for deliveries on the farm or elsewhere. Our model represents one such example, an old weather-beaten hopper placed on concrete bases and fed by small vertical conveyors.

Cable reels, a common commodity, come in all sizes and weights and present railroads with an interesting lading problem. Many of the solutions involved heavy wood timbers to brace loads that were prone to shifting but they added extra weight and complexity to load outs. Nowadays purpose built metal frame work is employed to streamline the loading operation and cut down on needless weight.
