Railbox 4-Packs

Two 4-Packs
Price per pack: $159.50

RailBox Company was founded in 1974 and was created to address a boxcar shortage in the United States. It was a subsidiary of Chicago-based TrailerTrain. According to the ICC car routing rules in effect at that time, cars owned by the various railroads were required to be routed back to their host road as soon as possible. If not routed back immediately the host road had to pay car stor-age and handling charges. This often caused a shortage of boxcars available to each railroad, not an actual numerical shortage of boxcars. Since RailBox was jointly owned by many of the railroads as a privately owned cooperative, RailBox cars were not subject to these rules. This meant that RailBox cars could be assigned for service on any railroad in Canada, Mexico and the United States on lines where an AAR Plate-C loading gauge was permitted. This concept was embodied by the company’s slogan, “Next Load, Any Road”, a slogan that continues today, over 40 years later.

During the 1970’s many railroads had old fleets of boxcars. Due to the poor financial state of many railroads these cars were dirty, grimy and not well maintained. Railbox cars stood out with their bright yellow paint, large logos and modern design. RailBox purchased boxcars from many manufacturers, including American Car and Foundry (ACF), Food Machinery & Chemicals (FMC), and Pullman-Standard (PS).

The rise of intermodal containerized freight, which began in the late 1980s and early 1990s, has reduced the demand for full carload boxcar service. In addition deregulation in the 1980s eliminated the legacy car routing rules resolving the boxcar availability shortage. Still, thousands of RailBox cars remain in service today and can be seen in mixed freight trains from coast to coast.

Today, RailBox (and the sister Railgon Company) are subsidiaries of TTX Company.
